Bringing Eula’s German Vanilla Custard to the Kitchen
Turning an heirloom German cookbook recipe into a silky, comforting pudding topped with fresh fruit.
Character: Eula
How to Pronounce Name: (YOU-lah)
From: Mondstadt
Element: Cryo
Weapon: Claymore
“Hello: Captain Eula Lawrence, Spindrift Knight. Knights of Favonius Reconnaissance Company. I extend to you my greetings. Huh? What’s that...? Yes, Lawrence, the evil aristocrats of historical infamy. Oh, we’re still very much evil. Just look at me, I’m infiltrating the inner ranks of the Knights of Favonius, all as part of a diabolical plan to exact our revenge and reclaim our former glory!”
Favorite Food: “I like making my own treats. Not always your typical sweet treats, though. For example, a chilled tomato and aspic jelly egg roll pairs very nicely with an iced-cold glass of Berry & Mint Punch. The most important thing is that they leave the people who like eating them with big smiles on their faces.”
How’d I End Up at Custard?
Hello, every birdie! The answer to how we got here is actually pretty simple.
Right before I started this series, my adopted German grandmother gave me a German cookbook. Since Mondstadt is based on Germany, I knew right away I wanted to pull a recipe out of it for Eula!
Originally, back when I first drafted this, I thought about trying her favorite food. But tomato season was ending, so I didn’t have enough tomatoes—and to be honest, I really didn’t think I could pull off an egg roll! So I decided custard was the way to go. I remember thinking how pretty it would look served up in a wine glass with fresh fruit!
Would I Change This Recipe?
The core recipe is pretty simple, but if you’re baking in the US, the trickiest part is tracking down specific German staples like Dr. Oetker Vanillin Sugar.
When I first made this, I just swapped in standard granulated sugar and a splash of vanilla extract, and it worked out great! But if you want the real deal, both Walmart and Wegmans usually carry Dr. Oetker Vanillin Sugar in their international aisles for around $2.00.
